Cold Steel San Mai Gurkha Kukri Kraton Handle (Secure-Ex Sheath) Review

I purchased this blade for my bug out pack and have used it to see what it could do. My tests occured in the North Eastern United States (northern Ohio and Michigan upper P). First of all, i don't believe the kukri is worth the price. the company has used its brand equity that it built from previous legends in their line (veitnam brass hilt tanto). As a result, you have a very high sticker price and not very much to offer. Now the blade does come sharp, but not as sharp as any Columbia River (which are the sharpest out of the factory commercial knives avaliable). Cold steel tries to say "yeah our knives are the tuffest out there"; the fact is, this kukri is a very expensive people slicer! this is not a tactical knife. it does wear fast when used against an oak tree/any hard wood! How is it that when i make contact with an oak tree it dulls the balde "what the fu..?". I can beat an oak tree to death with an ontario spak axe or machete and not a single bit of damage? because those tools do not have the "V-g1. Vg1 steel may have its advantages if you work in a slaughter house, but for survival the rigidity of the steel for the tip was not the best choice.
In short, I never have had a problem with a $30-$40 ontario work horse and they are much easier to sharpen when in the back country! I would go for the Columbia River Ultima tactical fixed blade (WITH VEFF seration) and an ontario in the woods any day. The Veff seration is the BEST IN THE WORLD!! I can't emphasize enough how awesome Columbia River product are! they are better than cold steel and they cost much much less! Also, Columbia River knives are the sharpest out of the box "period". If you want the back country package please don't make the same mistake i did and spend your money on this expensive dust collector or end of the world people slasher; furthermore, the fact remains that this thing is meant for cutting meat and rope and cardboard! that is it.... You see the demonstrations on Cold Steel...all they cut: 1.) meat, 2.) rope, 3.) cardboard, and 4.) water gallon jugs. that would be great if you were cutting those things to make a shelter out of in the woods.
In summation, i wish i had not purchased this kukri. I had to post this review because i know that most people won't use theirs and have it sitting for the "end times". It is not good to have this and then find out when it is too late that you will have a very difficult time sharpening this knife when you use it (convex blade) and it really honestly can't do tuff survival work. save the money and get a columbia river m16 13sfc, columbia river Ulitma 7" with Veff seration and a good ontario chopper! those have never let me down; never ever ever.... Now my dad would suggest the old school cattaragus 225q or machete (good old heavy stuff, but not that great!).
the point of this review is to let you know that just because cold steel use to be the best doesn't mean that they are anymore. DON'T BUY A NAME BRAND buy what is actually good!
I hope that this helps.

The Gurkha Kukri's VG-1 San Mai III blade will out-chop any factory or handmade knives; including swords twice its size, even expensive, hand forged Japanese Katanas. It's the heaviest Kukri on the market. The blade is almost an inch wider near the tip than at the handle, shifting the knife's balance point forward to allow a substantial blow to be struck with minimal effort, using inertia alone to complete the cut.

I'll admit I bought this machete over others available because of the looks. With a black finish and the saw on the backside it just looks badass. Once I got it in the mail, looking at the package, I knew I made the right choice.
First up, the packaging is a huge pain. Be ready to spend some time ripping this out of the plastic. There is a metal rivet thing going through the hole near the tip holding it to the packaging. A warning sticker is right on the blade which required using some Goof Off FG650 The Miracle Remover, 4.5-Ounce to remove the residue.
I looked over the blade and was rather shocked... this thing was duller than a butter knife. I might as well be cutting vegetation with a cricket bat. I could draw this blade against my skin fast and hard feeling like I just used a back scratcher to relieve an itch. I don't know if they forgot to sharpen this at the factory or what. I wouldn't be able to use this machete for anything.
I spent the next several hours creating an edge on the blade. I used a combination of sharpeners and stones. I recommend the ACCUSHARP KNIFE SHARPENER OD ACC008. When I was done, I looked down at all the metal shavings and thought I was in a metal workers shop. Once I had a sharp edge, the machete transformed into a tool I would be able to use.
The saw on the backside seems like it will work perfectly fine. I haven't tried it out yet. The machete feels solid in you hand, has a good grip and a good weight. I could see myself swinging this all day with no problems.
I will be using this for camping, hiking, and the occasional zombie horde.

Kukri Review

Over all, for the price this is a fairly good kukri. It is hard to notice in the pictures but the sheath is made of plastic and the metal accents seem to be made of a cheap metal like aluminum. But the blade itself is great! It came sharp and the engraving is beautiful. I will be definitely using the blade, and if it were just for display the sheath looks nice. So five stars for the kukri blade, but minus three stars for the poorly made sheath. All in all a pretty good purchase.

Trademark HUGE Full Tang Carbon Steel 18-Inch Kukri Machete Review

Trademark HUGE Full Tang Carbon Steel 18-Inch Kukri Machete

i believe this machete is over priced significantly. i don't believe any of the fabric/leather bits will last a seasons worth of wet, cheaply "cured". i work with steel for a living and i expected a little more heft on the blade for its size. for the price, the thing should have been 22" long at least. there's still a factory burr on the cutting edge showing a down and dirty manufacturing process. i was worried about it being too heavy for extended use, it's not cumbersome at all. though the spine is thick, the blade is quickly tapered to a manageable thickness and weight.
i'm going to keep it with some reservations that i should have given up a little length and several dollars and bought the ka-bar. i also believe i could have sacrificed some perceived "quality" and bought a 22" version cheaper and have been equally satisfied. would have given four stars but the price negated star number four, detracting from the item's value to my cheap self.

It comes really dull, if you don't know how to sharpen a blade, then have someone do it for you. This kukri has nice balance and durable construction. It'll hack any brush or branches you throw at it. It's a bit short, which is my only complaint. But this may work in your favor if you're going to use it for an all around knife, i've heard this knife was used for everything from chopping vegetables to battle. I'm very satisfied with this kukri.

United Cutlery Ronin Machete Knife, Black Review

United Cutlery Ronin Machete Knife, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought a Gerber Gator and was very displeased with the cheap feel of the knife. Longing for more, I bought this one because it has a good, long blade and a nice look. I was hesitant because the price (about $30) reminded me of the Gerber and I feared it would have rough craftsmanship. I don't expect a Japanese samurai steel knife for $30, but something better than flimsy metal and rough work would be nice.
The good:
1) Great plastic sheath. The knife locks in place when deposited into the sheath. The sheath comes with a shoulder strap and a belt look and it has a couple of configuration options. It also has eye holes around the outside of the sheath for cord, should you want to thread it through and have a place to safely store it. Again, this is a VERY GOOD sheath.
2) The blade. Came reasonably sharp and has SOLID heft to it. It's weighty and beautiful and it doesn't have the cheap stamped metal feel of the Gerber. It feels like a real knife blade. It's stainless, not carbon or flexible steel, which means it's not high dollar metal. But it's very nice and very substantial and, as mentioned before, it's $30. The metal sharpens reasonably easy, though you don't want it razor sharp for machete work.
3) Overall look is badass. The cut outs behind the blade (near the spine) are, I presume, a combination of esthetics and weight reduction. It does give this thing a wicked look. The blade is a jet black, but in the picture it is more gray. It has a shiny, beautiful deep black finish.
4) Price. Price. Price. You get a lot of knife for your money.
Now the only two (minor criticisms):
1) The tang wrapped in nylon cord. It's not comfortable to hold and would benefit from some sort of a handle. I am doubtful that the cord will last long on the handle, tied on as it is.
2) Balance. This thing is INCREDIBLY top heavy (probably thanks to the lack of a true handle and the weight it would provide at the butt of the knife). It's not necessarily comfortable on the wrist as it wants to tilt forward/downward when held in a vertical position. It needs more weight at the rear of the handle to make it feel better. That said, this is a machete, which is supposed to be blade heavy, but this thing is almost uncomfortably top heavy. Add the lack of a comfortable grip and it's a problem worth noting, though not a deal breaker.
I am very glad I bought it. I look forward to some real bushwhacking field tests with it. I like it as a weapon, but I bought it as a machete, so it will get a workout. Based on what I see and on the early chopping and hacking I have done, I feel it will hold up great. This is a terrific value and I recommend it strongly. It's better than a 4 star knife, but the handle and heavy blade do keep it lower than a 5.

15 in. Nepalese Gurkhas Kukri Review

This thing is pretty damn cool. It isn't the sharpest thing in the world, but it definitely held up to it's name and came with a waist sheath. My only real complaint is that the handle isn't made from wood. And while it would make sense if is was more than $11 or so for the handle to be wood, it's made out of something that seems like stylized plastic. I didn't really spend much time playing with it before I gave it to it's intended person, but if you are looking around for a Kukri, and don't want to pay allot, and still have something really cool, this is your item.

The kukri is the renowned national weapon of Nepal and the Gurkhas, an elite Nepalese Brigade of the British Army. The kukri is a long, curved knife that is deadly in the hands of the Gurkhas. They generally measure between 12 and 18 inches in length; this particular kukri is 15 inches long. The stainless steel blade measures approximately 10 inches long, and has a rat-tail tang. Kukri blades always feature a notch called the kaura, which is essentially a Hindu religious and phallic symbol.

Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri Kraton Handle Review

Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri Kraton Handle

this blade replaces the need to bring an axe, machete, or bowie knife. It does all the jobs in the woods. I highly reccommend it. I've put it through a ringer and it does not chip. However high carbon steel of this blade rust easy so take care to pour motor oil in the sheath so that it stays oiled. It is the right steel for the job however i wish cold steel would bring back the teflon coating of the original.
I do not recommend the san mi 3 version of this blade as my experiance with stainless is that it is too rigid and does not flex and this leads to chipping and an early "death" of the sword/blade.

Take a VERY close look at the movie promo picture. "Mila" is holding a MUCH shorter blade than what is being sold (and, as verified by watching the movie again.) The blades you'll receive are considerably longer, and you'll spend quite a long time trying to figure out how you can extract the kukri from the sheath (from behind your back)...unless you have '5 foot long arms'.
