(More customer reviews)I bought a Gerber Gator and was very displeased with the cheap feel of the knife. Longing for more, I bought this one because it has a good, long blade and a nice look. I was hesitant because the price (about $30) reminded me of the Gerber and I feared it would have rough craftsmanship. I don't expect a Japanese samurai steel knife for $30, but something better than flimsy metal and rough work would be nice.
The good:
1) Great plastic sheath. The knife locks in place when deposited into the sheath. The sheath comes with a shoulder strap and a belt look and it has a couple of configuration options. It also has eye holes around the outside of the sheath for cord, should you want to thread it through and have a place to safely store it. Again, this is a VERY GOOD sheath.
2) The blade. Came reasonably sharp and has SOLID heft to it. It's weighty and beautiful and it doesn't have the cheap stamped metal feel of the Gerber. It feels like a real knife blade. It's stainless, not carbon or flexible steel, which means it's not high dollar metal. But it's very nice and very substantial and, as mentioned before, it's $30. The metal sharpens reasonably easy, though you don't want it razor sharp for machete work.
3) Overall look is badass. The cut outs behind the blade (near the spine) are, I presume, a combination of esthetics and weight reduction. It does give this thing a wicked look. The blade is a jet black, but in the picture it is more gray. It has a shiny, beautiful deep black finish.
4) Price. Price. Price. You get a lot of knife for your money.
Now the only two (minor criticisms):
1) The tang wrapped in nylon cord. It's not comfortable to hold and would benefit from some sort of a handle. I am doubtful that the cord will last long on the handle, tied on as it is.
2) Balance. This thing is INCREDIBLY top heavy (probably thanks to the lack of a true handle and the weight it would provide at the butt of the knife). It's not necessarily comfortable on the wrist as it wants to tilt forward/downward when held in a vertical position. It needs more weight at the rear of the handle to make it feel better. That said, this is a machete, which is supposed to be blade heavy, but this thing is almost uncomfortably top heavy. Add the lack of a comfortable grip and it's a problem worth noting, though not a deal breaker.
I am very glad I bought it. I look forward to some real bushwhacking field tests with it. I like it as a weapon, but I bought it as a machete, so it will get a workout. Based on what I see and on the early chopping and hacking I have done, I feel it will hold up great. This is a terrific value and I recommend it strongly. It's better than a 4 star knife, but the handle and heavy blade do keep it lower than a 5.
