(More customer reviews)This sword blade looks nice. You can see your reflection on it, but it is a little stiff. It weighs 3 lbs 3.75 oz (560 g) without the tassle and its balance point is about 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) from where the handle connects to the blade (closer is better). My instructor tells me that this is more suited for decoration than for tai chi competition. You should ask your instructor before buying this sword. The scabbard is made of plastic and the handle is made of rubber. The yin yang symbol on the handle was not glued on clean, but from a distance, it looks good.

This Tai Chi sword is stainless steel with a mirrored polished finish. The sword is more rigid than a spring steel blade, but don't let that dissuade you. The sword is very firm in the handling but still has a great range of flexibility.

From a distance, this tassel is excellent, and its small size functions well for faster movements with the straightsword.
But if you look at it closely, it's poorly made; hardly any effort has been made to cover up the bulbous base that forms the shape. The strings over this base are so loose it's just hideous.

(More customer reviews)Nice and fast shipping. The sword's carvings and designs are great. The only thing I didn't really like was that the tip of the sword had a little burn mark on it, must've been from its manufacture and that the blade seems kinda loose a bit but it's not much of a big issue. The blade comes un-sharpen which I don't mind (for safety) but you can always sharpen it if you want. The blade is thick at the guard and gets thinner at the tip which allows the blade to be flexible and has a nice ring to it when you flick it. Overall I would say its good for display, practice with tai-chi, but I wouldn't use it to clash with other swords but you can if you want. Beautiful sword overall.

That other guy is a moron, if the sword gets stuck there are about 8 simple screws on the handle to take off. just note 2 are shorter than the rest they have to go in the exact spot you got them. but once the handle is off the entire sword comes out and each piece can be easily slipped in and out.
I was expecting a bit more from the carry case, but its not bad. overall a very good sword for $10

(More customer reviews)I bought these as a quick, cheap replacement for my last shinai, thinking that even if they were not excellent at least I'd have a spare. The parts that are traditionally leather (sakigawa, tsuka, and nakayuki) are made of a cheap, dry foam that disintegrates on contact (literally - my shirt was covered in foam particles when I unwrapped them). The bamboo is of the lowest quality, and looks like it will splinter at the lightest suggestion of contact; one reviewer has experienced quick breakage already.If the bamboo takes oil well I may rewrap them and use them as long as I can, but there is nothing to recommend these shinai.

I will probably end up putting some grip tape around the guard to hold the sword in place better, and to have a better grip on it. This should make it a high velocity (not impact) practice tool.

Red or Black Chinese Kung Fu Sword Review

(More customer reviews)I found this item when I was shopping for Chinese broadswords for training. I was initially weary of the price as, in my experience, such a low price usually meant a pot-metal sword. I can say that, taking a chance on these, I was pleasantly surprised.
This sword is a nice heavy metal (I want a sword not only to practice forms, but also for conditioning) and does have a sharpened edge - this is not a Wushu sword or a prop for kids to play with.
The handle is cord wrapped over (I want to say) wood or plastic (I do not have the sword in front of me now...)and is quite sturdy.
The hilt/blood cup and pommel is blackened brass and looks like the blackening will wear off quite easily with use (not a great concern to me), though the metal could be thicker here.
The scabbard is quite sturdy, though I would caution it's for decoration and storage, not strong enough to use in sparring.
Over all I am extremely pleased with this purchase - it is a great sword for the price (price being key here).
I will make a note that the swords I purchased were bought through Amazon from martialartsland.com - total price for two swords was $71. If you see the same sword listed for more- look around a bit (I see the identical sword here on Amazon for over $50...)

There were none of the rubber/metal pieces that quality shinai have to reinforce the shape and disperse the impact. The four pieces of what seemed to be oak or something similar were glued together under the handle, which also happens to be where the wood shattered during use. Do not recommend.
For those looking for a bargain shinai for kendo, I can't see any school accepting something like this.
