Do not buy, I have broken 2 so far. The 1st one lasted about 10 throws before breaking in half, the replacement from United only lasted 1 throw.

CAS Hanwei Francisca Antiqued Axe Review

CAS Hanwei Francisca Antiqued Axe

This axe is a tomahawk-sized piece that is historically correct. The photo does not show the backswept curve of the handle which greatly improves the balance and beauty of this axe. Comes with a very sharp edge as well as a leather guard which covers the edge for safety when the axe is not in use. The gentle curve of the handle and the exceedingly graceful shape of the axe-head combine to make this axe beautiful and aestheticly pleasing to the eye. It has excellent balance and is perfectly suited for throwing. Not the least bit heavy and "clunky" as are many battle ready replicas. I enjoy historical replica weapons for their aesthetic beauty, and many do not meet these criteria, but this axe is truly a work of art, and a fully functional one at that! Do a google search for this Hanwei product, because the price varies widely. I can happily report that the lowest price I found was with the company with the fastest and most complete response to my email questions! If you appreciate simple, beautiful, and functional historical weapons/tools, this is a real GEM!

The Francisca, so named for its Frankish origins, was used by the Vikings both as a throwing weapon and for close-quarters combat. Its graceful lines are legendary but the upswept point and downturned edge were both capable of penetrating chain mail. Our Francisca features a forged head with a fire-gray or antiqued finish and a swelled-end hardwood shaft for secure head retention. The shaft is also backswept, as were the originals, providing greater sticking capability when thrown.

This small axe is easy to throw and well balanced. It is very sharp and sinks into trees readily. It is a great fun axe, but a bit smaller than would be ideal.

United Cutlery Gil Hibben Small Competition Triple Thrower Set w/Leather Sheath Review

United Cutlery Gil Hibben Small Competition Triple Thrower Set w/Leather Sheath

I ordered these because the tip of my old throwing knife (Muela) snapped off. I use the quarter spin or no-spin technique, which, favored the Muela because it was 11 inches long or so and had a heavy blade.
These knives are around 8 inches and are shaped like a propeller. The handle is about the length of my forefinger - so I had some difficulty in using the no-spin method. I still use no-spin with these knives but I have trouble in longer distances.
If you're using the spin technique, you would be right at home with these knives. They seem to be designed for that purpose. Durability-wise, these seem solid enough. I have a wooden target and sometimes I get a bad hit where the knife bounces off and lands on concrete tip-first and they're still ok.
However, one of the knives was about .5-1 cm shorter than the other two. Not really a big deal, but that means their quality control may not be 100% spot on, so, just keep your eyes open for other defects.

Each knife is made from a single piece 420 stainless steel and measures 8-1/2-Inch overall in length. They have an ergonomically designed handle to maximize grip for throwing, as well as to help the hand naturally grip the knife in the proper fashion for maximum accuracy and consistency in throwing. The three knife set comes sheathed together in a single sheath. These attractive knives are a good choice for anyone looking for a competition throwing knife.
