(More customer reviews)This is a sturdy steel pen housing a sharp little knife in the barrel. The blade is stouter than I expected, with a rather steep triangular cross-section. It's great to have in most places where carrying an obvious knife would raise eyebrows. (People get upset about the darnedest things these days.)
It's suited for opening envelopes and packages, cutting tape or twine, and similar tasks. Before you even think of using it for self-defense, do a little experiment. Leaving the pen barrel ON, covering the blade, grip the "handle" or ink end of the pen and forcefully "stab" the other end into something solid. Now note where your hand is. If the blade were exposed, your hand would probably be in it, sliced and bleeding. Consider that, and then devote some thought and practice to "palm bracing" the knife.
I'd give the pen and the knife 5 stars if it wrote better, gripped better, and were heavier and sturdier, perhaps with a thick metal cap on the end so you'd have the option of using it as a pocket stick. But it's quite worth the asking price. We have several in our house.
