(More customer reviews)When I first got the sword I was amazed at how well built this sword is. I think I might of bitched a little about there not being a hamon and about its weight. But all and all this is one nice blade: big, well made and really impressive. The hardware, Tsuba, Fuchi and all other fittings are exceptionally well made. Resembling one at a time carving and engraving work. But Im sure they're machine made, and they look like they are made of Stainless Steel. With an actual appearance of sterling silver or silver plate.
This is one beefy, elegant basher-slasher Japanese samurai sword slicer machine. While at the same time being an elegant show piece of crafstmaship. It looks like you could cut a mountain with it without hurting it a tad. One last thing, I should mention the weight of the katana. Its very heavy. More than heavy, the balance of it makes it appear much heavier than other katanas I've held. But this weight issue,in the end may really not be a bad thing once you learn to wield it, but if you are smaller in size you might not enjoy this sword fot its hard to wield. At first I was turned off by the weight.
In any katana collection, the Cold Steel emperor will be the heavi est sword out of the bunch. On ce you are used to the weight can be a good thing, for you will be hitting people hard with alot of sword mass behind ya. Im impressed with the sword, with its couple of small shortcomings it still continues to impress me with its size, speed and agility and beauty. However, if this is the top of the line for Cold Steel, they could of perhaps made it with San Mai Steel, like the Natchez Bowie, but regardless this is a good sword for the money. Its 1/2 the price of the higher end Japanese swords, and while not being perfect, it will give you more than you would expect of a $450.00 katana.

Our factory has used only traditional materials for our Japanese sword's fittings. The Tsuba (guard), Fuchi (collar), and Kashira (pommel), are expertly made and finely crafted in nickel-silver brass. The Habaki (blade collar) is hand made out of nickel-silver brass and each hilt is covered in Samé (ray skin) and tightly wrapped in the traditional style with black silk cord. A beautiful Menuki (a small ornamental sculpture inserted between the ray skin and the cord wrappings on the handle) enhances the sword's aesthetic appearance and makes for a sword that is as traditional looking as we can possibly make it. All feature fully sharpened 1055 carbon steel blades, each heat treated to a spring temper. The blade surface is then given a careful polish by hand, with a distinctive mirror polish applied to the fuller (blood groove).
