This review is based on owning one of these S&W 24-7BS 24-7 beauties for almost two years. I'm writing a review after now purchasing my second one of these dependable S&W blades after my first one was recently stolen.
I normally wouldn't reveal a detail such that it was 'stolen', but the fact is, that's how good this knife really is. Having lost mine so abruptly, I found myself over the past two months reaching for it (for that spontaneous everyday task), or immediately realizing how badly I need it, literally, dozens of times. But, being a samurai swordsman, knife thrower, life-long martial artist and blade fancier, what's really important, is performance and telling about the knife itself.
First, this little blade held its superb edge from day one, to the day I lost it. I never sharpened it one time. Why? Because it always had the edge I needed for the task at hand. Running my own IT consultation company, I routinely opened every type of computer/component box shipped to our office. I've cut every kind of tape, rope, and string and every weight of cardboard, plastic wrap and product wrapping material (heavy plastics). Even the occasional pizza, piece of fruit or steak (of course, washed off before use), without loosing its razor edge or leaving a jagged cut, once.
Packing computers and parts for shipping out to our clients, this blade was used virtually just like any utility knife, you wouldn't think twice about taking to task in a shop environment. And to tell the truth, my original, lost SW24-7, was the smooth blade version. Versus my new purchase which is the partially serrated blade type.
Second, comfort. And not just comfortable in one's hand, for any task. But comfortable where is counts most, hidden and accessible on your person. This lightweight little baby is of legal size to 'carry concealed' in any state, I believe (under [across] four fingers/inches - 3.12"). Its slim design, ready to wear anywhere, accommodates instant access from any boot, pants, shirt or jacket pocket. The black blade (the style I owned) makes it the perfect night-time stealthy companion, effortlessly opening with one hand from multiple concealed positions.
Third. The steel clip keeps it securely ready and handy for the moment you may need it for protection. But it doesn't interfere when you grasp the knife in either the jabbing (pointing forward), or stabbing position (hammer fist). No matter where I placed on myself, it was always comfortably secure and ready to grab. Its wave-like handle design with rubber insert never had me lost for a secure grip, used as a tool or for protection. The first concern about handling ANY edged implement, whether sharp or pointed, used for any purpose, is SAFETY first. Never having the slightest stressing of the liner-lock, the thumb-stud opener on this well oiled blade, takes just a second to flick out securely in place. Without the slightest blade wobble. Ever. Which is always a symptom letting you know when you've bought a cheap knife.
I always felt like I was holding a quality tool. A long time owner of a number of Smith & Wesson firearms, this impressive little titan fits well in their product-line representing a tradition of manufacturing excellence. Even though this unit is made in China, S&W must have full oversight and control of 'quality control' because this blade is easily worth every penny you pay for it. And though I am trying to buy more American these days to help our economy, one can't deny considering this knife for purchase, will deliver many years of fine, dependable service.
Lastly. After having my original knife for about six months, I noticed one of the very fine torx-head screws, securing part of the handle, was missing. It took only one short call to S&W who freely sent me a full set of the 24/7's torx-head screws. How can you NOT buy from a company that stands behind their products in such an accommodating and service-minded manner?
