I plan to carry the Firestorm for personal protection and white-collar envelope opening etc.. I work in a not-so good area and this thing is perfect - It is really mean and nasty looking when you flick it open. And, once you CAREFULLY master flicking it open, it comes out as fast, or faster than a switch blade. And, this is the beauty in this design. It opens better than many other knives I own. I oiled it with WD 40 and it's broken in nicely. The blade cleans up well using a paper towl and WD 40 too. When open, this knife feels very firm and sure in your hand - a very good handle design. I must admit, at first I wasn't as impressed with this knife, but it really is designed to function, fit and feel. And, I now love it. It opens with firm and sure click and flic sounds. You could use the butt of this thing for an impact devise too (like a roll of quarters - approx weight).
So, it's a heavier knife and it's balanced nice, so I don't mind. The blade is thick, and has a mat finish, which I like, b/c your skin oils don't stick to it as much and smudge it up. The blade also includes a bar at the base of the blade which also assits with flicking it open. (Both, a great proctective devise, and opening devise). The grip handle would look better if it were a darker black, but, it fits well in your hand. Lastly, this thing is very hair shave sharp and dangerous. It was made for combat, police duty, or personal defense and there is nothing cheap, or flimsy about it. It would make a great all around knife too. All the parts are solid and higher grade. When I showed it to my wife, she said "whoa", and that's what anyone else would likely say too.
I would caution that this knife is intended for serious and mature users for either work, or protection. Not for those under 18 - (IMO). I also did some research, and Rick Hinderer, the designer of this piece, is very sought after. His designs are sold-out everywhere... His XM 18 has some identical similarities to this knife, and sells for $800. The Firestorm knife is a steal for the money and Gerber was lucky to get some of this guy's ideas. It's a bit heavy, but I don't care. The function, feel, and look make this a six star knife. Very impressive. I don't know much about it's steel, or how much abuse it could take. The blade is thick and large and heavy duty. So, who cares if one has to sharpen it some.. . Get you one and you'll see that I bought mine for design and function appeal. Great for your collection or.. .
