(More customer reviews)I was surprised by the quality of the blade. It appeared to be sharp, but on closer inspection, the edge is similar to the cutting power of a dull butter knife. The tip comes to a fine point, so care should be used considering this feature. The construction leads me to believe a bruise is more likely than a cut should an accident occur, except in the case of the point, which would be capable of inflicting a puncture or slash/scratch injury if it was cause of an impact. You would not know its dull edge from looking at it, and those at my martial arts school who inspected it were nervous about touching the blade's edge. The pictures led me to believe a slightly more inferior quality so I was pleasantly surprised. The balance and weight is good and suitable for training in precision. The grip was very good for complicated one and two handed cuts even with sweaty hands. It functions, performs and looks like a weapon.
The only issue I had was with the fit with the scabbard. I know for some styles a number of moves involve twirling the blade within its scabbard, but this is not the case with my own. There was considerable resistance to the draw with the blade, which could make some unorthodox drawing techniques difficult for those without massive upper body strength. A tight fit is an understatement. I initially had to use both thumbs to pry out the blade when I first examined the weapon. I can not say whether all blades would have this issue as there may be variations in the manufacture of the wooden scabbard. My overall impression was that the quality exceeded my expectations and was worth more than its price. It is an excellent practice blade and gives the impression of a considerable increase in safety without the trade-off in appearance and handling. Just mind the tip when using it and treat it as if it were the real thing to avoid accidents.
