When you first open the box or sealed plastic and heft this knife, you know it's of lasting quality. This particular knife has a 4-inch blade made from 440A stainless steel and a lusterous annodized blade coating that usually still has a few streaks of oil from the factory. Ah, the smell of a new knife!
Most knives of this sort have 3-inch blades made of the cheaper 420 stainless, which won't hold an edge as well as this knife will. If I have to gripe about one thing it's that I would have preferred the blade in 440C instead of 440A. However, Gerber knows about making steel and 440C, while it does have even better edge retention and qualities, is somewhat more difficult to sharpen.
Speaking of sharpening, if you're going to have a partially-serrated blade, you better know how to sharpen serrated blades. Hint: You don't scrape them over a stone as you do the front part of the blade. Sharpeners are available at very reasonable prices that will sharpen all sorts of blades, even kitchen knives, which are terrible at holding sharp edges. Look at Gerber's sharpeners and Spyderco's, which you can get here, I think. The Spyderco and the Smith, I think, are identical in features and price. The Spyderco even comes with an instructional VHS tape showing you how to sharpen anything. And that kit, which contains so much, all fits in a nice small case you can take anywhere. There are even some portable sharpeners with ceramic rods. They're great, but have to be cleaned with an abbrasive cleaner (like toothpaste or Comet), so make sure the tiny sharpening rods are accessible.
This knife also can reasonably be used for defense if you're willing to buy a book (available here at a modest price) entitled "Knives, Knife Fighting, And Related Hassles: How To Survive A Real Knife Fight," by Marc Animal MacYoung. If you want a good 5-star knife and are willing to spend the extra $$$, try Cold Steel's Voyager X2 in XC or XXC offerings. Those are 5- and 6-inch blade folders and are light, comfortable to wear, extremely tough--and they have AUS-8A blades. But these I recommend only if you find yourself in dangerous parts of town. For normal knife duty, the Gerber is superb.
What more can I say? You liked Gerber when you were a baby. You'll love it as an adult.

There comes a time in a guy's life when he might start thinking he has too many knives. But when you show him one of these, well, maybe he starts thinking that there's room for one more. After all, the AR 3.0 and 3.5 represent hybrid knife design at its best. You're looking at the near-perfect combination of strength, balance, ergonomics, minimal weight, and a stylized look that can rightly be described as bad to the bone.Sure, the AR models are easily opened with one hand. Sure, their mechanics are silky smooth. Sure, the pocketclip is the essence of convenience. And sure, they're built from a caliber of stainless steel that simply commands respect. But what you might not expect is the innovative blend of die-cast aluminum and Softgrip? inserts in the handle. To a lot of guys, this is a must-have knife.Tech Specs:Overall Length: 6.95"Length Closed: 4.09"Length of Blade: 2.93"Weight: 2.6 oz.Blade Material: High Carbon StainlessHandle Material: Die-Cast Aluminum and Softgrip InsertsBlade Style: Clip PointBlade Type: Serrated
