(More customer reviews)I bought this pair of practice swords for my wife and myself to train together. While it is difficult to see in the photo, they are straighter than the traditional bokken katana, and an inch shorter. At 21 oz, they weigh about the same. The pair came in dark brown stained wood, though I have seen other reports where someone got one brown and one black one. The only real negative points were that 1) the end of the pommels needed to be sanded down, especially if you slip your pinky around the end, as in some styles (a litle sandpaper takes care of this) and 2)the wrapping of the hilt is freehand, with no method to holf it in place. This means that you will need to take a toothpick and white glue, and glue along under each turn of the wrapping to keep it in place. That only takes about 15 min per sword. (note added after one month- white glue doesn't hold well in areas of high friction, like near the sword butt, but I have found that a little superglue holds the fabric to the wood.)
In practice, they swing comfortably and have a reasonable balance. They feel about as alive as you can expect from wood. I recommend them for practicing cuts in the air and forms. They might be okay for striking a matted target, just expect them to break after a thousand strikes or so. So if you are serious, you might have to buy a new set a couple times a month....
