Negatives: The sword DOES NOT have a real Clay Temper Line (Hamon). It is brushed on. It is a little top heavy and NOT perfectly balanced. Because it has a plastic pommel(the bottom part of the sword) instead of a heavier brass one. The cord wrapping is NOT wrapped in the traditional method but only looks like it. It also slips gradually down as you swing the sword alot which is annoying, and the plastic pommel slips loose also.
The steel is very hard and sharp, but may not be as shock absorbent as differentially clay tempered swords. The "MARU" technique means that the whole blade is hard steel instead of soft core steel with a hard edge.
It is a GOOD deal for your money, but you could get a BETTER deal online, just look around, and read everything before you purchase!

The handmade folded high carbon steel blade has been polished to a mirror finish and equipped with a thick hi (blood groove) and hand sharpened to a razor edge. Housing the blade is a wooden saya (scabbard), painted black and given a glossy lacquered finish. The tsuba (guard) is created from a brass mixture and molded to create ancient Japanese imagery; a dark antique finish has been applied to the tsuba to match nicely with the fuchi (collar) and kashira (buttcap). Real same (ray skin) is lies underneath the tsuka (handle) which has been wrapped by a black ito braid and adorned with an antiqued dragon menuki (handle ornament). The katana should be stored in the lined sword bag and placed in the lined cloth covered display box which functions well as a gift box (42Lx5Wx3.5H), also included is an alternate tsuba (guard). Measures 41 inches closed, 39.5 inches open with a 27.5 inch blade length and has a 21/64 blade thickness. Weighs 3lbs 3 ounces closed, an 2lbs 10 ounces open.
